EASY TO USE RESUSCITATOR

When a patient from a remote hospital in Peru needs artificial respiration, they are being transferred to larger hospitals that are better equipped. During the transfer, patients often receive unsafe respiratory therapy due to the lack of appropriate equipment or skilled healthcare workers. This innovation is introducing a simple and intuitive resuscitator that will enable physicians with little experience to provide pulmonary ventilation or artificial respiration without electric power for several hours. A small electric element can be added to make it suitable for prolonged periods of time. Additionally, the equipment will allow the physician to simultaneously carry out respiratory therapy, as well as auscultation and heart revival to his/her patient. It is the first innovation in the world to combine these two things. This equipment is extremely useful in hospitals without a ventilotherapy specialist (often the case in remote areas) or in hospitals on a low budget. It is obvious that this innovation – when successful – has the potential to be widely used in a national and international market. This project is funded under a collaborative agreement between CONCYTEC (Peru’s National Council for Science, Technology and Technological Innovation) and Grand Challenges Canada (funded by the Government of Canada) to support Stars in Global Health innovators based in Peru.
