In Myanmar, 200 mothers die per 100,000 live births and 62 children die per 1,000 live births before the age of 5. These are the worst rates in the region. Maternal anaemia, jaundice, and beriberi comprise most of the deaths, which are preventable through greater access to information and health facilities -- only one-third of deliveries are facility-based. Our idea is to scale up our maymay app (www.koekoetech.com/maymay) nationwide and add telemedicine, appointments scheduling, and more content. maymay aims to reduce maternal and under-5 mortality rates by providing women and their partners with access to quality health information regarding their pregnancy, access to 10,000 doctors and midwives via telemedicine so they can receive medical advice, set up appointments, as well as rate doctors and midwives. Our content includes the 9 months of pregnancy plus the first 2 years of the baby's life as well as information on nutrition and diabetes. As part of this grant, we will expand the content to include family planning, gender-based violence services, infectious disease prevention, and health KPI reporting. Under this grant, University of Sydney and UCLA academics will conduct a RCT to assess the app's health impacts. 80% of Myanmar's population uses Android smartphones and grant monies will be used to distribute the app via our partners PSI and Ministry of Health's nationwide networks. The app will be sustainable via ad revenues and doctor referral fees.
